So on today’s commute to work I’m stuck behind a V6 CTS, a Toyota Avalon and a Hyundai Sonata. What do all these cars have in common? The exhaust tips are a lie. Why do manufacturers fit fake tips on their exhaust when we can clearly see the 2 inch opening? I get that no Toyota owner wants to hear noise from a 4 inch exhaust but neither do they probably car about the size of it either. I include a picture of a Lexus ISF because it’s the most heinous example.

It’s just part of the modern car. Do you think those giant front grilles actually cool anything? Most of the time they’re blocked off. Sometimes it’s okay to want something to look nice. Plus you don’t want a giant gaping hole on your rear bumper because a “real” tip would melt the crap out of it.

It’s probably much cheaper, and stylistically more appealing for the masses, to mold the plastic bumper into an exhaust shape rather than use actual metal to shape fancy tips.

There’s another whole rant right there. But as far as the bumpers, what was wrong with normal pipes below it?

The public does enjoy being lied to. I think car makers should take it a step further and not even bother with actual exhaust noises and just fake it... oh wait.

My old Mazdaspeed 6 had the same problem, in the extreme.
Like, that’s a good couple inches of clearance on all sides between the real muffler and the “tip” that’s just a trim ring in that hole in the bumper.
Some of the aftermarket exhausts keep the stock fake tips in the bumper but try to fill them out better, like the Corksport.
Others, like the Magnaflow, have tips that are too big to fit with the stock fake tips so you end up with a circular tip in the oval hole in the bumper.

What part of below has anything to do with a gaping hole?

Fake exhaust pipes are the gateway drug to having a CVT transmission. Fake gears fake exhaust. Everyone’s doing it man.

Some of our Aston had issue with melting cheap ass bumpers. They integrate ok but ALL are just trim. Those shit get hot on most cars, performance or not

Gooble gobble sir... don’t fight it.
dispite the artificial factors, the cars are not getting slower, so there’s that at least :]

At least Lexus put a proper exhaust on the ISF rather then have one real and one fake. They do this for NVH reasons due to the vibrations from the exhaust.

The finisher trim pieces act as heat shields.
Plus, even routing the pipe under can melt the bumper

Yeah? How about the real exhaust on the Mazda 2? People love my pea shooter tip.

At least it’s honest.

Everything about the car is honest. I love it.

The solution: Miata with an honest exhaust...although I put a baffle insert recently so it doesn’t drone so badly on long drives.
